Historical background
The three provinces of the Ruhunu, Maya and Pihiti which belonged to the Three Sinhalese, included the Sathara Korale and the Thun Korale as part of the Maya province. Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat can be identified as a part of the Thun Korale including Atulugama, Panawala and Dehigampola and Pathabulathgama areas. This area which belongs to the Thun Korale is known as an area with limited physical resources and population.
Remained a powerful kingdom from 1521-1592. Known as the kingdom that fought with the first sword against Western domination. With a clear vision of the collapse of a 2000 year old culture and The kingdom was ruled by kings Mayadunne and Rajasinghe who fought valiantly to save it. Seethawaka Kingdom goes down in history. The center of this kingdom was the Maniyamgama area, which is considered to belong to more than a thousand villages and was then 60 maniyams. It is a historical fact that the Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat, which is the present administrative area including this area, belongs to the entire Seethawaka Kingdom.
There are many archeological ruins preserved by the Department of Archeology in this division. Seethawaka Rajasinghe Palace, Thalduwa Barandi Kovil and Rajasinghe Tomb are among them. The Maniyangama Rajamaha Viharaya and the Hakurugala Rajamaha Viharaya, which are believed to belong to the Walagamba dynasty, are also significant religious sites. Below are some of the scenic and scenic spots in the area.
According to history, the Seethawaka Rajasinghes as well as its inhabitants are known as warriors. Although the Seethawaka kingdom was born as a poor kingdom, there was a valuable human resource in the area to fill that gap. It is said that there were high personalities and courageous people in this division. Similarly, the two poets Dardvaja Padithuma and his son Alagiyawanna play an important role during the literary reign of Seethawaka which is considered as a dark age. Scholars believe that Alagiyawanna's praise of the Battle of Constance and the Savul Sandeshaya are very important and that the prose and verse belonging to earlier eras may have been destroyed due to the efforts of King Seethawaka Rajasinghe.
At that time such a large area of land was occupied but today only the area where the Seethawaka court complex is located remains. All other areas are broken by other names.
